There is little doubt anymore that marketers need social media. Customers are increasingly social media-oriented, creating more opportunities for brand engagement. However, many marketers don't have a strategy for using social media. As a marketer, sustaining your position on a social media platform can be a challenge, but you can beat your competitors if you use an effective strategy and the latest social media tools. Here are four keys to developing an effective approach to social media marketing:

01. Understand Your Target Audience

Before sharing information on social media platforms, you need to research your target audience to see if it will be interesting or attractive to them. Spend some time on social media listening tools to see what people are saying about your products, brand and services. For example, RiteTag analyzes hashtags and tells you which ones are clicked on and shared the most, while HootSuite analyzes social media activity, including likes, shares, trends and other metrics. You can also use Google Alerts to receive notifications when someone mentions your brand or product. These tools can reveal the type of information or topics that will be most appealing to your target audience.

02. Treat Content Like a King

Most social media marketers are familiar with the phrase "content is king." Not only is it true, but it probably won't change any time soon. The quality and value of your content is directly proportional to your likelihood of success, so you need to produce content that's valuable to your followers. Images and videos are easy to share, so provide interesting ones that relate to your goals and objectives. Your followers will help promote your product or brand by sharing when you provide top-quality content.

03. Understand Timing

Publishing well-timed and relevant content is an important part of your strategy as it has a significant effect on the success of your social media marketing campaign. Develop a content creation process in which you can produce content quickly and post it when your followers are most likely to read it. You can also utilize timing techniques such as "newsjacking" - infusing your ideas into a news story or event - to get your content in front of more people faster. To see when your followers are most active, use metrics tools such as Facebook Insights and post during high-activity periods.

04. Be Proactive

Social media marketing requires an active and consistent effort. It's not enough to post content sporadically and expect results. You need to create and stick to a schedule for analyzing and posting, tweaking it to keep up with what's working and dropping things that aren't getting results. Monitor and analyze feedback and adjust your strategy to keep up with trends, interact with your followers and see results.

Every social media marketing campaign requires an understanding of the target audience, quality content, proper timing and proactive engagement with followers. These are essential keys to any type of campaign, whether it's driving traffic to a website, increasing sales or promoting brand awareness. Incorporate them into your social media strategy and you'll be on your way to success.
